I do not recommend that anyone use the Japanese beetle traps that are on the market though. You may well be calling more than you currently have into your rose beds or gardens by using them. If you really want to use them, I would place them at the far end of your property and far away from anything they can damage. The most damaging rose leaf-eating pests are Rose Slugs , Japanese Beetles, and Fuller Rose Beetles . Many insects are most active early in the morning and around dusk, making very early morning and early evening the most effective times for insecticide application.
This cocktail will force the beetles to the surface, which will then attract hungry birds. Japanese beetles start as little grubs under the soil eating up the root system of plants and wreaking havoc to your lawn or garden. You will need to reapply for this solution after rain to ensure your plants remain protected all the time. Of liquid dish soap with one quart of water into a bucket. From there they’ll emerge as an adult and live for 30 to 45 days before dying. Thus, one way to prevent Japanese beetles is to avoid grouping plants that attract this invasive pest.
In the morning – which is when Japanese beetles are the most active – you can remove the cloth and kill the attached beetles with a bucket of soapy water. Then when the beetles have passed, you remove the row covers. But don’t feel like you’re purchasing row covers for a single use. You can use them again when the weather gets colder to protect your plants from freezing. They also help keep your plants protected from pests such as leafhoppers. If you grow carrots, then you have to be on the lookout for them.
